atmos was founded in 2000 in Tokyo by Hidefumi Hommyo as a small sneaker boutique on the second floor of a Harajuku building, opening as a deliberate response to the sneaker-collector culture that had been gathering through the late 1990s in the Ura-Harajuku scene. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce limited-edition Nike Air Max collaborations and other Japanese-aesthetic sneaker projects that would read as serious collector objects rather than mass-market athletic product.
The atmos vocabulary expanded through the 2000s and 2010s into a global sneaker-and-streetwear retail network: the iconic atmos × Nike Air Max 1 'Elephant' (2007, widely regarded as one of the most-collected Air Max collaborations in history), the Air Max 90 'Atmos' series, the atmos × ASICS GEL-Lyte programme, the atmos × New Balance 990 series, and the atmos Pink (women's-focused) and atmos Lab (technical and high-end) sub-brand expansion. The Harajuku flagship — the atmos Tokyo store on Meiji-dori — became one of the defining destinations of Tokyo sneaker retail.
atmos is held by Foot Locker Inc. (the US athletic retail conglomerate, which acquired atmos in March 2021 in a deal reported at approximately $360M). The retailer operates approximately 50 stores across Japan plus international locations in Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Los Angeles (Fairfax), New York, plus a substantial e-commerce platform. The retailer stocks approximately 285 brands at the flagship level and remains one of the defining Japanese-anchored sneaker-and-streetwear retail networks globally.
