Founded
1976
BEAMS was founded in 1976 in Tokyo by Etsuzo Shitara as a small Harajuku select-shop initially called 'American Life Shop BEAMS,' specifically focused on importing American college-and-workwear apparel that was otherwise difficult to find in Japan at the time. The brand expanded through the 1980s as one of the founding fathers of the Japanese 'select shop' format alongside United Arrows and Ships, with each select-shop building a tightly buyer-curated multi-brand offering that became the template for Japanese specialty retail. The BEAMS vocabulary settled around several distinguishing sub-brands and lines: BEAMS PLUS (the heritage American-menswear sub-line focused on Ivy League, Western, and military reinterpretation), BEAMS BOY (the unisex-streetwear-leaning Harajuku-focused line), BEAMS T (the long-running graphic-tee-and-collaboration sub-brand), International Gallery BEAMS (the higher-tier multi-brand European luxury offering), and BEAMS JAPAN (the Shinjuku flagship specifically focused on Japanese craft and culture). The brand's collaborations with Nike, Engineered Garments, Stüssy, Champion, and Levi's have been continuously influential since the 1990s. BEAMS is independent and held by the Shitara family (Etsuzo Shitara remained chairman until his retirement in 2022; his son Yo Shitara is the current president). The brand operates approximately 160 stores in Japan plus international locations in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, Bangkok, Singapore, London (a small Soho location), and a long-running cycle of pop-ups in Paris, New York, and Los Angeles. The BEAMS JAPAN multi-floor flagship in Shinjuku is one of the most-visited destinations of Tokyo retail culture.
