Department Store
Bergdorf Goodman
Bergdorf Goodman was founded in 1899 in New York by Herman Bergdorf as a small ladies' tailoring shop on Fifth Avenue, and was acquired by Edwin Goodman in 1901, who renamed it Bergdorf Goodman and gradually built it into one of America's defining luxury department stores. The flagship Fifth Avenue building (designed by Buchman & Kahn, opened in 1928 across the street from the previous Bergdorf Goodman location) has anchored the brand on Fifth Avenue at 58th Street for nearly 100 years.
The Bergdorf Goodman vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: the nine-floor flagship building (women's fashion on five floors, the iconic seventh-floor home and decorative-arts floor, the BG Restaurant on the seventh floor with views over Central Park, the menswear flagship in the separate Fifth Avenue building across the street), a buyer-led brand list anchored to every major LVMH and Kering luxury house plus the most carefully chosen contemporary independent designers, the long-running Bergdorf Goodman holiday window programme, and the iconic Bergdorf Goodman shopping bag in the brand's signature lavender-and-gold colour.
Bergdorf Goodman is owned by the Neiman Marcus Group, which itself was acquired by Saks Fifth Avenue (Hudson's Bay Company subsidiary) in a major US luxury-retail consolidation completed in 2025. The store operates the women's flagship on Fifth Avenue at 58th Street, the men's flagship across the street at 745 Fifth Avenue, plus the Bergdorf Goodman e-commerce platform. The flagship has been continuously one of the defining destinations of New York luxury retail since 1928, with a particularly strong position in the formal-eveningwear and high-jewellery conversation that anchors much of New York's old-money luxury customer base.
