Christopher Kane
Christopher Kane was founded in 2006 in London by Scottish designer Christopher Kane after his Central Saint Martins MA graduation. The brand has been one of the defining post-2006 London-anchored contemporary-luxury-womenswear brands, with the deliberately-scientific-and-medical-aesthetic visual culture (Kane's seasonal collections have been built around themes like Galapagos evolution, slime molds, and human anatomy) anchoring the broader brand cultural position.
The Christopher Kane vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: hand-printed silk and lace dresses with deliberately-scientific-aesthetic motif references, the brand's iconic Galaxy print programme (a 2010s-defining digital-print fashion product), hand-finished crystal-and-embellishment dresses, deconstructed jersey-and-knitted-lace separates, and a colour palette anchored to washed-cream, oxblood, ecru, soft-pink, washed-charcoal, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red, electric-blue, butter-yellow, and the iconic Christopher-Kane-aesthetic colour combinations. The brand has presented at London Fashion Week each season since 2007.
The brand is independent and held by Kane (after a 2018 buyback from Kering, which had held a stake from 2013-2018). Christopher Kane operates with no permanent retail of its own following the 2022 store closures, distributing through MATCHES, Net-a-Porter, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, the major US-and-European luxury department stores, and a curated set of contemporary-luxury-womenswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the defining post-2006 London-anchored contemporary-luxury-womenswear brands.
