Mary Katrantzou
Mary Katrantzou was founded in 2008 in London by Mary Katrantzou, a Greek-Cypriot designer who had graduated from the Central Saint Martins MA programme that same year. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a womenswear vocabulary built around digital-print engineering as a central design proposition — the digital-print pattern conceived as the foundational design element with the garment construction shaped around the print rather than the other way around. The 2010 'Trompe-l'œil' collection — featuring digital-print evening dresses that appeared to be made of perfume bottles, jewellery, or other objects — became culturally defining for the early-2010s digital-print fashion conversation.
The Mary Katrantzou vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: large-scale digital-print silk and cotton dresses with photographic-quality printed motifs (Fabergé eggs, Old-Master paintings, Chinese-export porcelain, dollhouse miniatures, postage stamps, and architectural-elevation drawings), the brand's iconic full-skirted A-line evening dresses with deliberately conversation-anchored print themes, knitwear and accessories that extend the digital-print vocabulary, and a colour palette anchored to whatever the specific seasonal print theme requires.
The brand is independent and held by Katrantzou. Mary Katrantzou operates a flagship retail concept in London (Mayfair) plus international wholesale through Net-a-Porter, MATCHES, Mytheresa, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Lane Crawford, the Boontheshop network in Seoul, and a wide international luxury-womenswear distribution. The brand has presented on the London Fashion Week schedule each season since 2010 and was awarded the British Designer of the Year — Emerging Womenswear in 2010 and the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund in 2012.
