SSENSE was founded in 2003 in Montreal by brothers Rami, Bassel, and Firas Atallah, who began the business as an online sneaker reseller before pivoting to a curated luxury e-commerce platform in the mid-2000s. The Atallah family had operated multiple Montreal retail businesses for decades, and SSENSE was conceived as the digital successor to their understanding of Montreal's bilingual French-and-English luxury-customer culture.
The SSENSE vocabulary settled around several distinguishing practices: an editorially-driven product page (with original photography, written designer profiles, and long-form features), a buyer-led selection that anchored heavily in Rick Owens, Comme des Garçons, Maison Margiela, Raf Simons, and a wide bench of emerging independent designers, and a Montreal-anchored fulfilment operation that became known for fast Canadian-and-US delivery. The SSENSE flagship store on Saint-Sulpice Street in Old Montreal (opened 2018, designed by David Chipperfield Architects) anchors the brand's physical presence.
SSENSE is privately held by the Atallah family. The company stocks approximately 500 brands across menswear, womenswear, and kids; reportedly crossed $400M in annual revenue around 2020; and operates one physical flagship in Montreal alongside the e-commerce platform. The platform's role in surfacing emerging designers — through editorial features and aggressive early-stage brand adoption — has been significant in defining which brands cross from European fashion-week visibility to global retail.
