Alanui was founded in 2016 in Milan by siblings Carlotta and Nicolò Oddi, who had previously worked in the family's textile business and at Marni. The brand's foundational thesis was singular: produce hand-knitted, image-rich cashmere cardigans in the Navajo-blanket pattern tradition, made by Italian artisans on hand looms over 50+ hours per garment. The Alanui vocabulary is entirely anchored to this one product category — the long hand-knitted cardigan in mountain, mesa, ocean, or constellation patterns has been the brand's defining product since launch and retails between €1,500-€4,000. The brand has expanded into knitted dresses, beanies, scarves, and a small set of leather accessories, but the cardigan remains the cultural anchor. Production is split between Italian hand-loom workshops and the brand's Milan atelier. Alanui is independent and owned by the founding siblings plus Italian luxury investor Tomaso Brignone. The brand operates a single flagship in Milan plus international wholesale through Net-a-Porter, MR PORTER, Mytheresa, and a curated set of retailers. Few brands have built so coherently around a single craft category — and few have managed to make hand-loomed knitwear a contemporary luxury product without the marketing scale of a conglomerate-backed house.
