Ann Demeulemeester
Ann Demeulemeester graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1981, was one of the legendary 'Antwerp Six' who collectively rented a truck to bring their first collections to the 1986 British Designer Show in London, and founded her own house there immediately afterwards. The breakthrough was a 1992 Paris solo show. Her vocabulary was, and remains, instantly identifiable: monochrome (white, black, occasional bone), draped construction, asymmetric cuts, deconstructed tailoring, leather trousers, feathers, and a deeply felt punk-rock undercurrent inherited from her love of Patti Smith.
Demeulemeester collaborated for decades with photographer Anders Edström and designed the legendary Patti Smith image archive. She retired in November 2013 with no warning to the press, leaving the house in the hands of co-creative directors Sébastien Meunier (2013-2020) and now Stefano Gallici (2020-present). Gallici has reanimated the house with a focus that returns the vocabulary directly to its Demeulemeester foundation, and the brand's commercial fortunes have recovered noticeably.
Ann Demeulemeester is held by a private investor (Anvers Management) and remains independent. Her house in Antwerp, designed by Le Corbusier, is preserved as a private residence and reportedly serves as a creative reference for the brand's continuing aesthetic. Few designers have left so coherent a body of work in such a specific colour and silhouette vocabulary.
