Maxfield

Maxfield was founded in 1969 in Los Angeles by Tommy Perse on Melrose Avenue, originally as a small avant-garde luxury concept store that brought the kind of inventory (early Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, Helmut Lang, Maison Margiela, and the original Antwerp-Six designers) that wasn't otherwise available in Los Angeles at the time. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: build a Los Angeles luxury-retail destination that would establish LA as a legitimate participant in the European avant-garde fashion conversation, rather than as a secondary West-Coast outpost of the New York luxury market. The Maxfield vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: a buyer-led brand list anchored to every major LVMH, Kering, and Richemont luxury house plus a particularly strong selection of avant-garde and conceptual designers (Rick Owens, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Carol Christian Poell, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons, Maison Margiela, JW Anderson, Marni, the early Off-White and Heron Preston relationships), the iconic Melrose Avenue flagship's deliberately-minimal-and-architectural interior design (the brand's flagship building has been featured as one of the defining luxury-retail interiors of LA), the long-running Maxfield × brand-collaboration exclusive capsules, and the iconic Maxfield Bleu and Maxfield Beverly Hills sub-stores. The brand is independent and family-controlled by the Perse family (Tommy Perse remained operational through his retirement in the early 2010s, with his daughter Karyn Perse continuing as the operational lead). Maxfield operates flagship retail in Los Angeles (Melrose Avenue, the original 1969 flagship; Maxfield Bleu; Maxfield Beverly Hills), plus a substantial Asian-and-European wholesale presence. The Melrose Avenue flagship has been continuously one of the defining luxury-retail destinations of Los Angeles, with a particularly strong position in the avant-garde-and-conceptual-fashion conversation that has anchored the broader LA luxury-customer base for over 55 years.
