Namacheko
Namacheko was founded in 2014 in Antwerp by Kurdish-Swedish designer Dilan Lurr and his brother Lezan Lurr as a contemporary menswear-and-womenswear brand specifically focused on what they described as 'the cultural conversation between Kurdish craft traditions and contemporary European luxury fashion.' The brand's foundational thesis was specific and culturally rigorous: produce a contemporary fashion vocabulary that drew explicitly on the visual culture of Kurdish-and-broader-Middle-Eastern weaving, embroidery, and textile traditions, rebuilt at the level of Antwerp-trained European luxury construction.
The Namacheko vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: hand-embroidered silk-and-cotton shirts referencing traditional Kurdish textile motifs, deconstructed wool-and-cashmere tailoring with deliberately Middle-Eastern-craft hand-finishing detail, deliberately oversized and architecturally-proportioned outerwear, the brand's recurring use of traditional Kurdish-rug-and-kilim colour combinations, and a colour palette anchored to terracotta, saffron, deep-indigo, washed-charcoal, oxblood, and the brand's recurring use of natural-undyed ecru and washed-cream tones. The brand has presented at Paris Men's Fashion Week each season since 2018 and was nominated for the LVMH Prize semi-finalist position in 2019.
The brand is independent and held by the Lurr brothers. Namacheko operates with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, Antonioli, GR8, Lane Crawford, the Boontheshop network in Seoul, and a small set of carefully chosen luxury menswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has been one of the more conceptually rigorous post-2014 Antwerp menswear debuts, with the deliberately-Kurdish cultural-positioning specifically anchoring the brand inside the contemporary 'multi-cultural-fashion-language' conversation that has been continuously rewritten in Paris menswear since 2018.
