Concepts was founded in 1996 in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Tarek Hassan as a small skate-and-sneaker shop within Tannery's College Yard store before separating in the early 2000s into an independent retail operation that became one of the defining American streetwear-and-sneaker boutiques of the post-2000 era. The Concepts vocabulary built up around an exceptional New Balance and Nike SB collaboration program, a tight Adidas Originals and Asics relationship, and a broader streetwear-meets-sneaker buying philosophy that positioned the store as the East Coast counterpart to LA's Undefeated and New York's Kith. The Concepts collaboration archive runs deep: the New Balance 998 "Boston Tea Party," the Nike SB Dunk "Lobster" series (red, green, yellow, blue, purple), the Asics GT-II "Phantom" project, the broader Concepts x New Balance 996, 999, and 990v3 pipeline, and the long-running Concepts x Nike SB program that ran from the late 2000s through the 2010s and produced some of the most collectible Dunk releases of the era. The store's curatorial discipline—small drops, tight quantities, no fast-fashion compromises—built a customer base that treats Concepts releases as collector territory rather than retail product. Concepts now operates from a Newbury Street flagship in Boston, a New York store in Tribeca, an Atlanta location, and a Tokyo flagship that the brand uses as both retail and pipeline anchor for its Asian distribution. The broader Concepts operation has expanded into proprietary apparel and a robust e-commerce program, with the store's seasonal lookbooks, in-store installations, and ongoing programming with Nike, New Balance, Adidas, Asics, and Salomon keeping Concepts inside the small group of American streetwear-and-sneaker retailers that operate at curatorial-credibility rather than wholesale-volume registers.
