I.T was founded in Hong Kong in 1988 by brothers Sham Kar-wai and Sham Kin-wai as a small multi-brand store in Causeway Bay, started with the explicit project of bringing the European designer fashion of the late 1980s—Yohji Yamamoto, Helmut Lang, Margiela, Comme des Garçons—to Hong Kong customers who had no other realistic access to it. The "I.T" name—short for "Income Team"—encoded the founders' early commercial framing, but the operation rapidly evolved into one of the defining Asian multi-brand retail empires of the post-1990 era.
