Founded

Neiman Marcus was founded in 1907 in Dallas by Herbert Marcus, Carrie Marcus Neiman, and her husband Al Neiman as a small luxury specialty store on Elm Street in downtown Dallas. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: bring European luxury ready-to-wear to Texas during a period when most US luxury retail was concentrated in New York and Chicago, with a particularly strong commitment to women's couture and high-jewellery that defined Neiman Marcus's early national reputation. The Neiman Marcus vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: the iconic Dallas Downtown flagship at 1618 Main Street (the original 1914 building, with multiple subsequent expansions), the famous Neiman Marcus Christmas Book (an annual catalogue published since 1926 that became culturally famous for its 'fantasy gifts' section featuring extravagant offerings like private islands, custom airplanes, and one-of-a-kind objects), the In-Circle loyalty programme, and a buyer-led brand list anchored to every major LVMH, Kering, and Richemont luxury house. The brand has historically been one of the defining US-anchored luxury department-store buyers of European fashion. Neiman Marcus Group is owned by Saks Fifth Avenue (the Hudson's Bay Company subsidiary), which acquired Neiman Marcus in a major US luxury-retail consolidation completed in 2025. The company operates approximately 36 Neiman Marcus stores across the US plus the Bergdorf Goodman flagship in New York (part of the same group), the Neiman Marcus Last Call outlet network, plus the Neiman Marcus e-commerce platform. The Dallas Downtown flagship — which spans approximately 350,000 square feet — remains one of the defining US-anchored luxury department-store flagships and has been continuously associated with the Texas luxury-customer base for over 115 years.
