Consuelo Castiglioni
Marni was founded in 1994 in Milan by Consuelo Castiglioni, who began designing furs for her husband Gianni's family business and gradually developed an entire ready-to-wear vocabulary distinguished by unexpected colour combinations, unusual textile treatments, and silhouettes that read as cerebral rather than seductive. Through the 2000s Marni became one of the most-quoted brands in fashion criticism — copied widely, owned by editors universally. Consuelo Castiglioni left the brand in 2016, and Francesco Risso (formerly of Prada and Malo) took over creative direction. Risso's tenure has been a noisier, more art-school, more performance-art-inflected reading of Marni — runway shows with hand-painted Tyvek sets, collaboration with No Vacancy Inn and Carhartt WIP, the Maxalot collaborative tee, the Trunk bag's continued evolution. The brand has held on to its editorial reputation while reaching a younger, streetwear-adjacent customer. Marni was acquired by Renzo Rosso's OTB group (Diesel, Maison Margiela, Jil Sander, Viktor & Rolf) in 2012. Production remains in Italy. The Milan flagship on Via Bagutta and the Marni Tokyo store in Aoyama serve as the brand's primary retail anchors; the line has also expanded into a strong homeware and design practice, including a long collaboration with the Brazilian designer Sonia Cipolla on hand-woven raffia pieces.
