Nordstrom was founded in 1901 in Seattle by John W. Nordstrom and Carl F. Wallin as a small shoe store on Pike Street, called Wallin & Nordstrom. The company expanded through the 20th century from a single shoe shop into one of the defining American luxury department-store chains, with the iconic Nordstrom flagship at Pine Street in downtown Seattle (the company's headquarters) anchoring the brand's position in the Pacific Northwest luxury market. The Nordstrom vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: a buyer-led brand list anchored to the major LVMH, Kering, and Richemont luxury houses plus particularly strong contemporary and emerging-designer selections, the long-running Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (an annual July-August event that has been a defining moment of the US luxury-retail calendar since 1965), the iconic Nordstrom personal-shopper and customer-service programme (widely-regarded as one of the most extensive in US department-store retail), the recent acquisition of HauteLook and Trunk Club, and the 2021-opened Nordstrom NYC flagship at 57th Street and Broadway (the brand's first standalone Manhattan flagship). Nordstrom Inc. is publicly listed on the NYSE (NYSE: JWN) but went through a 2024-2025 take-private transaction completed in early 2025 led by the Nordstrom family (Erik B. Nordstrom and Pete Nordstrom) and Mexican retail conglomerate El Puerto de Liverpool. The retailer operates approximately 100 Nordstrom flagship department stores plus 250+ Nordstrom Rack off-price stores across the US and Canada, plus the Nordstrom e-commerce platform. The retailer has been one of the most resilient US-anchored luxury department-store chains across the broader 2010s-2020s retail-disruption period.
