Bodega
Bodega was founded in 2006 in Boston by Oliver Mak, Jay Gordon, and Dan Natola as a deliberately under-marketed multi-brand sneaker-and-streetwear store, originally accessed by walking through a working corner-store bodega on Clearway Street, Back Bay — the actual sneaker store hidden in the back. The brand's foundational thesis was specific and culturally specific: take the local-Boston-corner-store visual context and rebuild it as a deliberate insider-joke entry point for sneaker collectors, then build the store reputation around tightly-controlled limited-release collaborations.
The Bodega vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: the iconic Bodega × New Balance collaboration programme (the 1300, 999, 990, and 1906R Bodega releases have been among the most-collected New Balance Boston collaborations of the 2010s-2020s), the long-running Bodega × Saucony series, Bodega × Adidas, Bodega × Reebok, and a wider in-house Bodega apparel programme that has expanded into a complete contemporary menswear offering. The Clearway Street original store relocated to a much larger street-front flagship at Harrison Avenue in the South End in 2017, with the original 'hidden bodega' entrance preserved at the original Clearway location.
The brand is independent and held by Mak, Gordon, and Natola. Bodega operates flagships in Boston (Harrison Avenue, the post-2017 flagship; the original Clearway Street hidden store), Los Angeles (Fairfax Avenue), plus international wholesale through selected sneaker-specialty retailers globally. The retailer has been one of the defining US-anchored sneaker-and-streetwear stores of the post-2005 generation, with a particularly strong position in the New Balance Boston-collaboration ecosystem.
