MSGM was founded in 2009 in Milan by Massimo Giorgetti, who at the time was creative director of the Italian denim brand Mauro Grifoni. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: build a young, print-heavy, pop-culture-literate Italian ready-to-wear house that could read as a generational alternative to the heavier Milan luxury establishment. The early collections leaned hard into graphic prints, slogan-tees, and the proportional language of indie-band stage wear.
The MSGM vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: digital-print silk shirts and dresses (often referencing pop iconography, abstract painting, or photographic prints), the brand's logo-rendered millennial-pink and grass-green colour combinations, oversized tailored coats with print linings, and a continuous run of cult collaborations with artists, musicians, and indie cultural institutions. Giorgetti remained creative director throughout, with the brief exception of his 2015-2017 simultaneous tenure as creative director at Pucci.
MSGM is owned by Paoloni Group (the Italian apparel manufacturer that has financed the brand since launch). The brand operates flagships in Milan (Corso Venezia), Tokyo (Aoyama), Hong Kong, plus 200+ wholesale doors globally including SSENSE, MR PORTER, Net-a-Porter, MATCHES, and the major US and European department stores. The brand has been a defining example of how a post-2008 Milanese ready-to-wear house can be built around printed graphic energy rather than heritage tailoring or accessories.
