Founded
2012
Civilist Berlin was founded in 2013 in Berlin by Alex Flach, Sami Krad, and Marius Reiter as a small skate-and-streetwear store at the corner of Brunnenstraße in the Mitte district, opened with the explicit thesis of bringing the kind of skate-and-streetwear inventory (early Polar Skate Co., Palace Skateboards, Fucking Awesome, Hockey, the broader European-and-American skate brand network) that wasn't otherwise available in Berlin at the time. The brand has been one of the defining Berlin-anchored skate-and-streetwear stores of the post-2010 generation. The Civilist Berlin vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: a buyer-led brand list anchored to skate-specialty brands (Polar Skate Co., Palace Skateboards, Fucking Awesome, Hockey, Lakai, HUF, Magenta Skateboards, Antihero, Anti Social Social Club) plus the broader contemporary streetwear network (Stüssy, Carhartt WIP, Patagonia, Norse Projects, Acne Studios, Maison Kitsuné), the iconic Civilist in-house apparel programme (heavyweight cotton tees, hoodies, and limited-edition collaboration product), the long-running Civilist × Nike SB, Civilist × adidas, Civilist × Vans, and Civilist × New Balance collaboration capsules, and a continuous run of Berlin-anchored skate cultural programming. The brand is independent and held by Flach, Krad, and Reiter. Civilist Berlin operates the single Brunnenstraße Mitte flagship plus a substantial e-commerce platform serving Europe. The retailer has been one of the defining post-2010 Berlin-anchored skate-and-streetwear stores, with the deliberately-Berlin-anchored visual culture specifically anchoring the brand inside the contemporary German-streetwear conversation that has been continuously rewritten since 2015.
